LONELY ARE THE BRAVE - MAVERICK SABRE ALBUM RELEASE

London-born and Irish-bred, Maverick Sabre aka Michael Stafford is the new voice in UK urban soul music. Possessing one of the most distinctive voices in UK soul right now, he turns this fantastic instrument to an album of almost modern day blues songs, imbuing them with a sense of hope and promise. Rich yet vulnerable, it’s what sets this new troubadour apart.
His is a new voice to highlight the changes in the urban emotion of the British youth. Socially-conscious, perceptive and precise, Maverick Sabre’s lyrics articulate some of the issues with today’s youth, and shines a light towards a more optimistic worldview.
Opening with the new single, the plaintive, yearning’ I Need’, it’s an immediate statement. Rich and warm, its dusty intro opens up to into a sun-filled modern soul classic. Recent hit ‘Let Me Go’ thunders into view with its startling Isaac Hayes sample and huge blasts of brass. A recent Top 20 hit, it’s one of the singles of the year so far. A big track for both Radio 1 and 1 Xtra as well as Commercial Radio, ‘Let Me Go’ received huge specialist support initially before getting a daytime champion in Fearne Cotton (who crowned the single her ‘Record Of The Week’). ‘Let Me Go’ ended up the Highest Played Single for 2 weeks in a row, with Maverick recording incredible sessions for both Huw Stephens and Trevor Nelson as well as great support from Zane Lowe who recently crowned new single ‘I Need’ Hottest Record In The World. Alongside this, he has also recorded sessions with Jo Whiley and Dermot O’Leary on Radio 2 and two sessions with Mistajam on 1Xtra, the DJ that has been behind Maverick from the word go. His support has helped propel Maverick Sabre into the upper echelons of the charts and has cemented Maverick as one of the key new acts this year. Alongside all this, Maverick turned up to perform live on Chris Moyles’ recording breaking show for Comic Relief earlier this year.
Other highlights include ‘Follow (Open Your Eyes)’ which has a timeless piano line and a hypnotic groove and again possesses that real sense of hope that is one of the hallmarks of Maverick’s work. At the same time he is not afraid to explore the darker themes on songs such as ‘Cold Game’. Credible and distinctive, his is a new voice for a new generation, at once fresh yet timeless.
Recent sold-out shows at the 100 Club and Jazz Cafe have seen Maverick Sabre become an essential live act. He has toured with Snoop Dogg, as well as working with Professor Green (who he won an NME Award with for the track ‘Jungle’), Chase & Status and Cee-Lo Green. His songs are filtering through to the mainstream, with new fans in the likes of Katy B who recently covered ‘Let Me Go’ on Radio 1’s Live Lounge. Earlier this year he pulled out a show-stopping performance on Later With Jools Holland with his rendition of ‘I Used To Have It All’. Other TV appearances include an acoustic performance as part of this year’s BBC Glastonbury coverage, as well as slots on Soccer AM and T4 interviews.
